Rescued puppies find homes

A big-eyed brood of rescued puppies drew a crowd of hundreds when they went up for adoption at the Orange County animal shelter this weekend – and every one of them found a home.
The 50 puppies were taken from a sweltering Santa Ana pet shop last month, where they were suffering from dehydration, respiratory infections and other health problems. So many people showed up Saturday to adopt them that the Orange County Animal Care Services used a lottery system to pick winners.
The shelter had announced on Friday that the pet shop animals would be up for adoption.
The shelter also found homes over the weekend for four cats, a rabbit and a guinea pig that had been taken from the Village Pets store. It still has a few kittens and rabbits available for adoption; visit www.ocpetinfo.com for information on pet adoptions.
Shelter spokesman Ryan Drabek said at least 100 people showed up early for the adoption event and were waiting in the parking lot for the doors to open. By the time it was over, he estimated, several hundred people had turned out.
Twenty other dogs at the shelter, not from the pet store, also found homes in the crush of adoption-minded visitors.
“It was pretty crazy,” Drabek said. “It was wonderful.”
