Dogs are more then just a cute fuzzy animal, they help humans in more ways then we can help ourselves. A soldier back from war who wanted to kill himself did not because his rescue dog stopped him, that dog saved him... Killing that soldiers healthy dog is not the answer! I understand not wanting to subject soldiers to rabies, but what are the statistics of that happening? Is it that hard to educate people on the signs of a rabid animal? Since there are so many strays there why not? Yes but they will risk the mental health of our soldiers? I am in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps and they prohibit soldiers in in theater from adopting these stray animals because it has KILLED American Soldiers. The reason is that these dogs have never had vaccines for many diseases that can be passed to humans- and the US military is not going to spend money on taking care of stray animals when they are actually a hazard to our troops. US soldiers have died from rabies they contracted through a stray animal bites in Afghanistan and Iraq.. And since it was only a puppy and the bite didn't hurt this soldier didn't think anything of it. And soon enough he died because of something that can be completely prevented! This happened very recently as well. This occurred last summer in 2010. So, before you assume that you know everything just because it's about cute little dogs, you may need to get the facts about the entire situation.
